Our Philosophy and Framework for Sustainable Wellbeing

Moving beyond the individual deficit model to address the root causes of burnout, compassion fatigue, and change fatigue.

Our Philosophy

We believe that burnout is not a personal failure. It is a signal that the demands of your caring work are consistently exceeding your capacity to recover, with not enough replenishment to restore your resources. This is especially true in times where the demand for change is constant and there are high levels of uncertainty.
For too long, burnout has been seen as an individual problem. But burnout is not just about the individual. It is about the environment people are operating within. You chose this work because you care deeply. But the relentless demands and constant giving have taken their toll. You are exhausted and running on empty. This is not because you are not strong enough. It is because the demands on you have consistently exceeded your capacity to recover.
Our philosophy is based on the concept that burnout results from a mismatch between the individual and their environment. Exceeding demands leads to depletion of resources and change makes this happen at a faster pace. When there is no resource replenishment, exhaustion occurs.
Sustainable wellbeing needs to consider both the personal and environmental aspects. Giving will be rejuvenating when the individual’s purpose aligns with their values and identity, but will be depleting otherwise.

The Capacity Model

The Capacity Model asks what determines whether people, teams, organisations, and communities have enough capacity to adapt, recover, and contribute sustainably.

It identifies six core resources that fuel us. When depleted, exhaustion follows. When replenished, vitality becomes possible.

The six core capacities are:

  • Physical Energy: Your body’s ability to sustain you. Restored through sleep, nutrition, and movement.
  • Mental Clarity: Your cognitive resources. Restored through reflection and space.
  • Emotional Balance: Your capacity to process emotions. Restored through self-compassion.
  • Compassion: Your ability to give and receive care. Protected through boundaries.
  • Purpose and Values: Your sense of meaning. Restored through reconnecting with what matters.
  • Resilience: Your capacity to adapt and recover. Strengthened through intentional strategies.

The Capacity Model helps you understand burnout as a person-environment mismatch rather than a personal failure.

Person-Environment Mismatch

Burnout occurs when there is a mismatch between an individual and their environment. This can be demands exceeding resources, limited autonomy, insufficient support, unfairness, values conflict, lack of recognition, or misalignment between purpose and identity. When these mismatches persist, burnout becomes inevitable. No amount of individual resilience training will fix an unsustainable environment.

The Contribution Perspective

Many people work in helping roles for purpose and meaning. When purpose and meaning align with values and identity, giving can be regenerative. When misaligned, giving becomes extractive and draining. Understanding where contribution becomes constrained is essential for sustainable wellbeing.

Contribution requires some spare capacity, a buffer. If all available resources are being used just to navigate the demands of the day, contribution becomes impossible. Even if the person still desires to contribute, there is no energy to do it with. For people who care, this in itself becomes demoralising.

Rest and Resilience

Rest is important. But if there is a values conflict or loss of meaning, rest alone will not fix it. Resilience training is important. But if basic needs are not being met, it will not land. We need to address the whole picture with individualised restorative practices.

Flourishing Communities

Flourishing individuals create flourishing teams, organisations, and communities. When helping professionals shift from individual deficits to a capacity model, they transform how they show up and increase their impact.

Our Commitment

We are committed to challenging the individual deficit narrative and addressing both personal and environmental factors. You are not broken. You are depleted. And depletion can be reversed.

We’re Here to Help

If you are feeling exhausted, overwhelmed, and running on empty, you do not have to navigate this alone. Our programs help helping professionals move beyond generic resilience training and address the root causes of their exhaustion.
